GED Chutes Stainless Steel Laundry Specification

A GED Chute is manufactured to a high quality Stainless Steel with a material thickness of 1mm Stainless Steel (other thicknesses available upon request).

A laundry chute is normally supplied in circular sections with internal diameters ranging from 250mm to 800mm. Where possible GED Chutes always recommend that a commercial chute be the optimum size of 600mm diameter.

Each chute is specifically designed using the latest CAD technology to meet customer requirements and to suit the building layout. Generally a typical chute will comprise of 2 or 3 sections per floor connected by angle rings or a telescopic joint. An entry section holds the laundry chute door and the chute is supported at each floor level using a clamp band support frame.

Submittals

Following receipt of order GED Chutes can provide fully dimensioned shop drawings for approval prior to manufacture.

Construction

The laundry chute shall be fully factory fabricated and all joints except those required to separate the sections for shipment and installations, shall be welded or lock seamed tight. All chute sections shall fit inside the section below and there shall be no bolts, rivets or other projections inside the chute to impede the fall of the laundry. All vertical chute trunking, chute entry sections and vent pipes shall be manufactured from and XX mm Stainless Steel. GED Chutes shall provide sealant and all other necessary equipment to successfully install the chute.

Chute Support Frames

GED Chutes shall provide wall mounted brackets including M12 nut and bolts and have a 3mm rubber insert as a sound isolator. All fixings to be provided by GED Chutes. The wall brackets shall be Stainless Steel (dependant on specification).

Health & Safety

GED Chutes install within all of our chutes an automatic 'Fire Damper', this has a fusible link that activates at 72 degrees - shoots across, no electrics are required. Our fire dampers are of European standard BS EN 1366-2:1999 (supersede BS476:PART22).

Doors

GED Chutes shall provide XX No. 600mm x 600mm Stainless Steel, fully opening, automatically closing side hinged doors that are self closing. The doors shall be self-sealing, with a lockable handle and have a 60 or 120 minute fire rating. Our chutes are designed to be safe to operate and all chute doors are finished in white with rounded edges and a hydraulic closer mechanism that safely controls the speed of the door when closing. Brushed Stainless Steel can also be specified.

Installation

GED Chutes shall provide experienced engineers to install the laundry chute. The chute shall be installed to our standard instructions and building plans. GED Chute engineers shall test and commission the laundry chute system, after repairing or replacing any damaged or non functioning parts.

Acceptance

GED Chutes shall issue a certificate of acceptance and shall be signed by the main contractor or client on successful completion of installation.

Chute Maintenance

GED Chutes will always recommend that an annual 'Service & Inspection' is carried out to ensure that the chute complies with insurance obligations and a 12 month fire certificate is issued. GED Chutes will always offer the first years Service & Inspection half price.

If required/if specified by client/optional extra;

Electrical Interlock System; The inclusion of 'Electrical Interlocks' within the overall design is an optional extra. The Electric Interlock System should be mounted in the panel above the entry section. Operation shall be push button, with one indicator lamp, green indicating ready for operation and red indicating system in use. The master control box for the interlock system shall be mounted in the laundry room, close to the laundry chute exit point. The interlock system shall operate off a 240v electric supply reduced to 24v for safety and shall have a factory fitted preset timer. The timer shall be preset to allow single use of the chute at any given time. GED Chutes ensures that all electrical equipment complies with the latest IEE Standards and is installed and tested by qualified engineers.

Deceleration Tracks; Soiled laundry and laundry bags, when fully loaded, can weigh between 25 to 50kgs, dependent on size and the manner in which they are packed. A 50kgs solidly packed bag of soiled linen achieves a reasonably high terminal velocity and it is in this type of situation that GED Chutes recommends the use of deceleration tracks.

For buildings of 5 storeys, a short deceleration track will suffice, the higher the building the longer the length of deceleration track. Appreciating that floor space is always a premium GED Chutes offer a curved and helical deceleration track to achieve the same results in less space. Deceleration tracks can also be used to bring the bagged laundry directly onto a sorting table, similarly made from 1.5mm Stainless Steel. Other lengths are available to customer specification to match with height and width of the laundry chute.

Chute Doors; can be specified with slow closing (hydraulic) door damper mechanism. This will prevent the door for slamming shut and reduce noise to a minimum.

Chute Full Indicator; on the chute exit point a sensor which will monitor the level of Laundry collecting at the bottom. At the pre-determined full level an alarm or LED will notify the responsible person. The system can be stand alone or connected to the properties BMS (Building Management System). Clients use the chute full indicator sensor to prevent laundry backing up inside the chute potentially causing a fire risk and damage to laundry.

The hopper door shall be self closing and sealing and have at least a 60 minute fire rating in accordance with BS476 & BS5588. Our chutes are designed to be safe to operate and all chute doors are finished in Steel.

Installation

GED Chutes shall provide experienced engineers to install the refuse chute. The chute shall be installed to our standard instructions and building plans. GED Chute engineers shall test and commission the refuse chute system, after repairing or replacing any damaged or non functioning parts.

Execution

A. Equipment

Shall be protected at all times from physical damage.

B. Construction Waste

Under no circumstances shall the chute be used for construction waste.

Acceptance

GED Chutes shall issue a certificate of acceptance and shall be signed by the main contractor or client on successful completion of installation.

Chute Maintenance

GED Chutes will always recommend that an annual 'Service & Inspection' is carried out to ensure that the Chute complies with insurance obligations and a 12 month fire certificate is issued.

Standard Refuse Chute Specification

A. Included

Supply and installation of refuse chute system, with certain accessories and ancillary equipment as specified.

B. Not Included

The provision of floor drains, water taps, electrical isolator boxes, infill floor slabs and erection of enclosing walls or the connection of electric or water supply to any equipment in this section.

C. Authority

The provided equipment shall meet the requirements of BS1703:2005 and BS5906:2005 Design and components currently used in NCD Limited t/a GED Chute Solutions Refuse Chutes shall be considered the standard for quality, performance and appearance.

D. Service and Parts

The manufacturer shall maintain the ability to supply spare parts and components, for a period of three years from the date of manufacture.

Products

A. Supply

As detailed on drawing a 600mm internal diameter refuse chute system as manufactured by NCD Limited t/a GED Chute Solutions

B. Material

All vertical chute, chute entry sections and vent pipes shall be manufactured from 1.5mm Stainless Steel. GED Refuse Chutes conform to British Standards BS1703 and BS5906 and are manufactured to the highest quality.

C. Hopper Access Doors

Shall be provided to all occupied floors of the refuse chute and manufactured as follows:

Designed to ensure that refuse inserted into the hopper cannot cause a blockage in the chute. The hopper shall be bottom hinged, self-closing and sealing, have a 60 or 120 minute fire rating and a smoke seal to BS476 Part 22 Sections 6 and 31.1.

D. Floor Support Frames

NCD Limited t/a GED Chutes shall provide. No. 40 x 40 x 6mm R.S.A. frames with welded clamp bands, the clamp band to have a 3mm rubber insert as a sound isolator. All fixing nuts and bolts to be provided. The frame shall be rustproofed after manufacture.

E. Discharge

The manufacturer shall provide a Stainless Steel discharge to be connected to the underside of a fire shutter door. (Discharge shall be 3mm reinforced construction). Fire shutter shall be automatic in operation, 60 minute or 120 minute rated and be capable of cutting off the chute and its shaft from the refuse room. A 6mm thick manually operated cut-off plate shall be fitted to the discharge section.

F. Chute Cleaning

NCD Limited t/a GED Chute Solutions only recommend refuse chute cleaning by using high powered remotely operated jet cleaning, used in conjunction with pressurised water mixed with degreasing solution.

NCD Limited t/a GED Chute Solutions high-powered, remotely operated jet cleaning service uses a unique spinning head design in conjunction with water technology to ensure chutes are cleaned thoroughly, quickly and effectively, with minimal disruption to the site.

A high-pressure water system connected to a winch with a high velocity spinning head sprays a constant jet of water. The unique design utilises up to 50% less water than conventional high pressure water systems. Mixed with a biodegradable detergent that kills 99% of smells, this jet of water is carefully controlled as it is lowered down the chute ensuring a thorough, even clean that removes harmful bacteria and foul odour microbes from the surface.

All waste is washed down the chute and is collected, leaving it thoroughly cleaned and smelling fresh - all in a few short hours with minimal disruption to tenants. Recommended cleaning schedule every 6 months.

G. Disinfectant and Sanitising

Included. as above.

H. Ventilation

The chute shall extend through the roof, terminating 1.2mm above roof level complete with a weathering terminal or as specified.

I. Exhaust Fan (if required/if specified by client/optional extra)

The manufacturer shall provide a factory fitted foul air exhaust fan, the fan to be fitted internally in the refuse chute vent pipe. An access door will be provided for servicing the fan. The fan shall be protected above and below by lightweight mesh screens, which are to be removable for cleaning. The fan motor shall be 1/5 HP, class F, continuously rated, capable of a 200m/hour air displacement. Electric supply 220/240V, 50Hz, 0.8A.

J. Sound Damping/Acoustics

The exterior surfaces of the refuse chute are wrapped with a 3mm layer of WDS Damping Sheet that are bitumen enriched, self adhesive backed material manufactured from a mixture of bitumen, plasticisers and elastomers and has been acoustically tested at a UKAS certified independent test laboratory. Tested and Rated according to: BS EN ISO 717-1:1997, BS EN ISO 140-3: 1995 & BS EN ISO 2750: Part3: 1995. Flammability (FMVSS 302) - Class SE.

Additionally, the chute can be lagged with 50mm acoustic 'punf' foam insulation and 2mm barrier matt. Resilient anchors between chute and frame. Padding to prevent rattling between gallows brackets and block work walls.

K. Chute Construction

The chute shall be fully factory assembled and all joints except those required to separate the sections for shipment and installation, shall be lock seamed or welded. The hopper doors shall be bolted in place on the entry sections and checked to ensure proper alignment with the inner baffle plate. Sections shall fit inside the section below and there shall be no bolts, rivets or other projections inside the chute, to impede the free flow of falling refuse. A minimum of one slip or telescopic joint per storey shall be allowed to give working tolerance. The manufacturer shall provide sealant to seal all joints and further provide all other equipment necessary to execute the contract.
